Spring is springing, at least in south central New Mexico. I talk a bit about that on my other blog. (deirdre-fourds) I've got spring fever bad but am trying to get things done. My next story is in --beating the deadline by a week. It's a cat shifter tale, appropriately titled Catastrophe, and one I had a huge amount of fun with. If you are fascinated by the cheetahs and ocelots and their kin, this may appeal. No release date yet but perhaps in June or so. Much more on it later!
Wrenching has a date and a cover that I shared my last post. Look for it on March 16. It is not a bit Irish
or green but can still be kind of my St Patrick's gift to my readers. I'll do another excerpt from it in a day or two and a little background before the release date.
Last but not least, I do write some things besides the milder romance Gwynn pens and the hot hetero and GLBT ones that Deirdre writes. I doubt if many of my readers here know, but saddle mules are now quite the rage among trail riders and there are mule events, shows etc. in many parts of the country. Mules are hybrid creatures with a donkey or burro father and a horse mother. They have an undeserved reputation for being stubborn, hard headed and often mean. But they really aren't. Back in my youth I spent about ten years working with my dad in a business of training and selling mules as well as horses. The mules were just beginning to be recognized as good saddle animals and I feel like we kind of pioneered getting them out in front of the public which was the first step in getting them to the level of popularity they enjoy today!
Anyway, there is a monthly magazine called Mules and More about raising, training, riding and showing mules. I put together a small article with some pictures and lo and behold, it is a feature in the March issue. And I made the cover--that is a much younger me back in those days on a little speckled mule we called Beano since he was spotted up like a pinto bean. If you go to www.mulesandmore.com you can see the cover picture right there on their home page! How many romance writers do you know who have been mule skinners?? So far I haven't put a mule in a novel or novella but that might happen soon!
A late note, I got some contributer copies of the magazine in today's mail--Sat, Mar 1) and will give one or two away to folks who comment on this post--autographed of course!!
Experience Deirdre's Green Heat with excerpts and covers from her many erotic and erotic romance tales and chat about her writing and future releases!

News on Wrenching!
Wrenching is the title of my next release. I just got the nifty cover and the good news that this PAX will be coming out on March 16, just a bit over a month away! I think I mentioned how five of us elected to do stories for a theme of "it happened in a garage" and I think the PAX title will be Grease Monkeys. All five stories are going to involve a character who is a mechanic of some kind, generally auto or truck. But there I am sure will be the point of departure since I know all five of us are going to offer up very different tales!
Mine begins with readers meeting Malachi "Mal" Dunbar who is a mechanic with the handicap of a mangled left hand he injured as a teenager but has managed to overcome and excel in his trade. When his secret crush and hero comes into the garage where he works with a problem, Mal has a chance to show his skills and soon to provide some really valuable help to the man of his dreams, rancher Dan Winslow. Who knows where this is going to go!
I'll give you a pre-edit excerpt in a minute. Here is the cover, which I think is just great! But man, that is one big tool, huh?! Wink, wink, nudge, nudge!! I have been a helper and go-fer to several mechanics who were key people in my life and would say that is about a 2" or larger combo wrench and would be used mostly on heavy equipment or a really big truck but it is a nice prop here with some suggestive implications. This man knows tools and how to use them! More details soon so stay tuned!

Excerpt:
Early spring
Malachi Dunbar deftly twisted the
wrench to secure the wheel bearing he had just installed on a customer’s
pickup. Few who saw him with his tragically deformed left hand would imagine
how skilled and capable he was at his chosen trade of auto mechanic.
Determination, perseverance and creative use of the abilities one had could
take a person a long way. Especially if you pursued your goal with dogged persistence
and never took no for an answer, not even your own personal nos.
When he heard a noise outside the
bay of the garage where he worked, Mal wriggled out from under the truck and
went to investigate. Normally he left dealing with customers to his boss, but
Ben was out this afternoon, taking his very pregnant wife to the doctor. It was
an excuse even Mal could not argue with, so he’d agreed to mind the store as
well as carry on with his normal work.
When he saw who stood just inside
the door of the office and parts store section he rued his acceptance. There
stood the last person he wanted to see and deal with. Hero, and subject of both
envy and passionate longing, Daniel Winslow probably didn’t know Mal existed.
Why should he? Heir to the largest and most successful ranch in the area, he
always appearing cool, collected and in control. Dan gave the impression he had
the world on the end of his lasso, branded and ear notched with the Flying W’s
marks.
Still, Dan looked decidedly anxious
and troubled, if the expression on his face was a valid clue. Mal wasn’t quite
sure if he was seeing anger, worry, sadness or a mixture of all three on his
idol’s face but he did recognize he’d have to deal with Dan, whatever it was.
He cleared his throat, trying to
find his voice somewhere down behind his breast bone. For a few seconds words
absolutely refused to come. Finally he managed to croak a facsimile of, “Can I
help you with something, Mr. Winslow?”
Dan wheeled toward him. “Er, is Ben
around?”
Mal shook his head. “Nope, sorry.
He had some business in Los Mercados. Won’t be back in until tomorrow morning.”
Dan growled what sounded like a
muffled cuss word. Then he gave a half-irritated shrug. “Okay, then. I know you
do the work anyway, at least most of the time. If I leave the pickup, can you
check it out? The brakes seem to be going. I really don’t want to drive it
another yard until someone can determine what’s going on. My foreman’ll be
along in a few minutes to take me home so I don’t need a loaner.”
Mal managed not to stutter or show
a tenth of the feelings roiling through him. Although Dan stood not an arm’s
length away, he’d better not do anything stupid. Instead he turned toward the
cluttered desk where Ben did the paperwork for the shop.
“Sure, you can leave the truck. I
wouldn’t want to drive up or down Alamo
Canyon Road with iffy brakes myself. Let me write
out a work order for you.” Finding the right pad of forms and a pen took enough
attention that he regained some focus so his good hand only shook a little as
he filled out the information. Then he gave the pad to Dan, careful not to
touch the other man’s hand.
“I’ll need you to sign this and
then I’ll give you a copy to keep while we work on your truck. Not that it
isn’t immediately recognizable as yours. Everyone knows the Flying W brand and
this particular Silverado, at least everyone in Copper Canyon .”
Dan scrawled his name across the
line and handed the pad back. “Thanks. Do you want to me to call Ben in the
morning or can you explain to him?”
“I’ll take care of it unless you
feel a need to speak to him,” Mal said. “You’re a regular customer so I doubt
he’ll have any questions but he can call if he needs to.”
“All right.” Dan nodded. “Good.
Thanks.” The single toot of a horn apparently alerted him that his ride had
arrived. He spun and started toward the door. Mal stood and watched as the other
man headed for a pickup, a much dustier,
older and well-worn one than the shiny blue and white Silverado he left behind.
He had to admire the horseman’s trim ass, set off by a snug pair of Wranglers,
as he lifted a leg to climb into the cab.
Dan—make that Mr. Winslow—was one
good looking guy. Chocolate colored hair that curled a bit behind his ears and
along the edge of a silver-gray Stetson, a matching mustache, and the greenest
eyes Mal had ever seen. Almost too pretty but all man despite his looks.
Well
of all the fucking luck. I hope I handled that okay. I know Winslow is a regular
customer and kind of a pal of Ben’s from way back. At least he didn’t make a
comment about my hand or whether or not I could do the work. Maybe he didn’t
notice it or even care.
He exhaled a ragged half-sigh as he
went to open the door on the garage’s empty bay. Then he carefully drove the
Silverado in and set the emergency brake. A few minutes later, after securing
the braces under the pickup, he manipulated the hydraulic lift to raise the
truck. He locked it down high enough he could stand underneath to examine the
lines and the rest of the brake system. The truck was only a few months old, so
a sudden failure seemed peculiar, even downright unlikely. Mal had to wonder
what was going on, what he’d discover.

Gray is not my color--an editorial!
A writer friend recently blogged about her unhappiness that a certain nameless novel and its sequels have caused a major shift in the way the New York publishers are buying and marketing fiction. The basic premise now is, if it is not super kinky-hot, don't even got there. Now I am a huge advocate of the old "diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks" principle and I think there is room out there for a tremendous range of subjects and levels of 'heat' in fiction.
I freely admit that I do write erotic romance, both hetero and GLBT varieties. (Romance because it is first about love and conflict and 'issues" and very secondarily about sex) I do basically believe that love is something that can come to anyone in any way and that there is no such thing as "bad" Love regardless of who the parties are in terms of color, gender, politics, religion or much of anything else. I would say let's keep physical love expressed within a species and consenting adults except perhaps in the case of some fantasy where shape-shifters of many kinds may be hit by Cupid's arrows. However, although there are very explicit love scenes and some of the cruder words used in my fiction, there are several things on which I draw a hard, black line. If what is going on does not at least speed up my heart beat and respiration a little bit, it will not get written. And I am totally not into any form of pain, humiliation, domination and such. Just do not go there.
Yep, a long time ago when I was experimenting and trying to establish my own person hood and what my on buttons were as far as sex went, I got caught up in some things that quickly taught me what I do NOT like or enjoy. Due to a number of experiences in childhood and growing up, I set a high value on my own independence, freedom and self-determination. My theme song could be, "Don't fence me in."
So you will find very little of what is commonly called BDSM in my books. No, gray is not my color and although I may someday steel myself enough to read at least the first book in that trilogy, just to be informed, I will not see the movie (as I cannot afford to throw away the ticket prices which are far from the fifty cents etc. we paid for matinees in my youth) when I would probably have to get up and walk out at some point. At least based on what I have heard about this phenom.
For this reason I cannot believe the current 'fad' should be a limit on what the major houses are willing to buy and publish. The reading public may be titillated for a time by 'dirty, kinky' little books--and I consider them little because they are ignoring a zillion other huge and important issues and aspects of the human condition to focus in on one very small and narrow one. I would think we as a civilization have matured to where we do not titter and tee-hee over naughty little jokes and crude cartoons as we might have done in middle school. Are we still not free of the Victorian pretensions where we have to put skirts around furniture legs but have a veritable sewer of filth flowing ignored beneath the rugs? I guess not.
Yeah, as they say "sex sells" but once it becomes so blatant and common that we have to go ever farther to keep up the high (yeah, it seems its like an addictive drug in this; with ever a larger dose or more potent strength demanded) just where are we going to stop? Incest? Necrophilia? Animals? We're already deep into the child porn--which literally makes me want to gag and then commit mayhem on the "perps." Maybe it is time that the 'silent majority' (I am pretty sure we still are a majority) stood up and began to cry foul. Freedom and openness and such are good; I have no desire to go back to the strict censorship and narrow requirements (like twin beds for married couples in movies!!) that were once in place but IMHO the pendulum has swung about as far as it can and still retain a modicum of civilized and decent humanity.
Comments and discussion welcome!!! Let me hear what you think.

If you are elsewhere we can talk about it and find a compromise! It is listed right now at $11.80 on Amazon. So that will be your price, delivered in any of the 50. Here's the link if you prefer to shop for yourself. : http://www.amazon.com/Hearts-Heal-Gwynn-Morgan/
You can also go through the Amber Quill site to order the book, both in electronic formats--a choice of five to fit almost any e-reader--as well as the print version. To get there click on or cut and paste the following: http://www.amberquill.com/HeartsToHeal.html
On other news, the mss is now in and the contract signed for Kit's Ultimate Deal, which will be coming out in May. More on that one shortly. I can't wait to see what the hugely talented Trace Edward Zebar comes up with for that cover!! His work is just awesome--always.
Deirdre is also on pins and needles to see what will cover her upcoming release--I think it is in March but not totally sure yet--Wrenching. It's vintage Deirdre, two hot guys and a lot of action, intrigue, angst and sexual tension! It's part of a PAX group, all five tales taking place at least partly in a garage and we all seem to have gone with a mechanic theme but knowing the five authors, they will be vastly different stories. Deirdre's is set in New Mexico on a ranch and nearby small town with a flavor of some troubles that are happening in this region. Excerpts and such fun stuff coming soon.
Go in peace friends and readers!

Odds and ends of news
As you all know, Hearts to Heal has been out in ebook form since the first weekend of the month and the year. I still haven't gotten word that print copies are available but I will let everyone know the very minute I get this word! I will be ordering at least ten copies and maybe more so I can have some to sign and send to any friend or fan who wants one.
Here's a shot of me at a book fair a few years back. I'm a little thinner now but otherwise look about the same and still favor the southwest style attire for my professional appearances!
For those of you who are Gwynn Morgan fans, another re-released book will be coming out in May. It hasn't been out of print quite as long as Healing Hearts/ Hearts to Heal but has been off the market for several years and wasn't widely available when it was in print. It was published by Hardshell Word Factory back in the days when ebooks got no respect and finding outlets for the print versions of such books was about like a treasure hunt for hen's teeth! So to 95% of current readers or more, it will be brand new.
The original title of this book was Deal For Love and it will be reissued as Kit's Ultimate Deal. As I said it will be out early in May. Of course I am very excited about it, too. The book is set in Tucson and in Arizona's scenic White Mountains and the Chiricahua Apache Reservation in that area. The H&H are a fun couple with vastly different priorities and life styles who start their relationship trapped in a blizzard, sharing a rustic cabin for about 40 hours! It was a book I really enjoyed writing and I've contemplated a follow-on or spin-off which will star the Deal hero's Apache friend, Jason Hunter and of course give Bret and Kit a cameo spot so you can see how their life has progressed after "The End" in Kit's Ultimate Deal.
Looking a bit farther ahead, the next books to be reissued will be the first two of my Copper Stars trilogy, Penny's Luck and Mollie's McGuire. I do not intend to change those titles and Jessie's Legacy, the third book in the group which has never been completed and published, resides now in a busy block in my computer as I work to complete it. I hope to get Penny out late in 2014 with Mollie and Jessie to follow in 2015. These are very special books that honor my late husband's time on the Bisbee Police Department, where he was working when we met, and my middle son's long tenure with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department as well as other members of both organizations that I have known. The books were originally set in the early 1980s; I have not decided whether I will try to bring them into the twenty-first century or not! I'm open to suggestions.... I could update the first two as I re-edit them although right now I am a bit reluctant to do so. The time period is part of the atmosphere, I think!
While they bear little in common with J.A. Jance's Joanna Brady series except a common setting, I hope my love for the area comes through in them as clearly as hers does in those wonderful mysteries. She too makes the setting almost another character, which I think adds so much. I'm an ardent fan of hers, especially those and the shorter series on the Walker family. We have corresponded a bit and even have little dogs that could almost be siblings! She has an adorable little sweetie that looks a lot like my wee Rojito! How is that for a coincidence? Here is my little guy ensconced in Mom's fave chair!
So that brings you up to date on Gwynn's activities for the time being. As soon as I have a cover for Kit I will share it. It should be along in a month or so. Meanwhile you can visit my (our!) other blog, www.deirdre-fourds.blogspot.com to follow many more personal adventures and some of the other things going on in my life, influences that have colored a lot of my writing and such!
Deirdre is busy too but I'll leave that for another post in a few days.

Hearts to Heal is Out!!!
This book was released this past weekend in e-formats. It will be available in print later this month and I will let you know when. Of course I will get a few copies and they will be available signed at a smidge below the list price--I try to share my author discount with special fans and friends.
Anyway you can find it at http://www.amberquill.com/HeartsToHeal.html
Hearts To Heal by Gwynn Morgan ISBN-13: 978-1-61124-533-2 (Electronic) ISBN-13: 978-1-61124-844-9 (Paperback)
"You're walking." Stating the
obvious. Great wit, Doc. Jerry
felt absurd, but any other words he might blurt out would be completely inappropriate.
She smiled, a self-conscious little smile, and nodded. "Yes, I'm walking. I can't get a shoe to quite match the height of my cast and cast boot, though. Heels are too high and everything else is too low, so I feel-lopsided."
"You look gorgeous." He was unable to stop himself from that comment, appropriate or not. "Like you're ready to go to a party."
"She is," Jennifer declared, reentering the dining room. "There's a party right here. We're celebrating, aren't we, Bonnie?"
Tearing his gaze away from Bonnie long enough to look at Jennifer, he saw she, too, was dressed up. At first, he wasn't sure whether he liked the effect or not. A brief black slink of some clinging fabric slithered over her body, showing off the girl's developing figure. On a woman Bonnie's age, it would have been one sexy outfit.
Hell, it was sexy on Jennifer! And he didn't like that a bit. What was his little girl doing, looking fifteen going on twenty-five? Her makeup was obvious, nothing subtle about it at all. The high-heeled black sandals she wore added at least three inches to her normal five-foot-eight, putting her almost eye-level with him.
He looked back at Bonnie, whose anxious gaze darted between him and Jennifer as she measured his reaction to his daughter's appearance. Bonnie's concern decided his response in an instant. He'd ignore the provocation of Jennifer's too-mature new look, at least for this evening. He could not dampen Bonnie's glow of pleasure by involving her in yet another acrimonious discussion. No one outside the family was going to see Jennifer tonight, anyway. He'd deal with that issue later.
"I feel like I brought the OR home with me. Give me about ten minutes to shower and change. Then I'll be ready to join you."
Better make that a cold shower, he amended to himself, as he took one last look at Bonnie before heading for the safety of his room. She looked like the wholesomeLatina
girl next door, but at the same time, as sexy as J-Lo or Christina Aguilar. Whew.
He was going to have to play it cool--she'd be his patient for at least another
six weeks.
……. (they have dinner here. Afterwards Jennifer and her visiting friends ask to be excused and return with a wrapped gift which they give to Bonnie.)
As he reached to pull Bonnie’s chair out, he couldn't resist the urge to touch her bare shoulder. The tawny skin felt as silky and inviting as it looked, warm beneath his hand. He sensed the delicate tremor that ran through her before he moved his hand onto the chair. She turned her head sending her hair slipping across his fingers, a delicate brush stroke that sizzled through him.
A faint vanilla-cinnamon scent emanated from her skin, from that silky, gorgeous hair. Would her skin taste the same way, if he put his lips there, just inside the thin line of the strap? Before he could test his sudden notion, the three girls returned in a flurry of giggles. Jennifer had her hands behind her. When she extended them toward Bonnie, he could see she held a small package.
Bonnie blushed. "You didn't need to do that! I mean all of this; it's too much. I feel...I'm embarrassed. There's no way I can repay all you've all done." Her glance swept to meet Jerry's for an instant and then moving on to include Mercedes and Jennifer and her friends.
"We wanted to." Mercedes and Jennifer spoke together, the exact same sentiment.
"Yes, we did," Jerry agreed. Bonnie glanced back at him, and her blush deepened.
"Open it...open it," Suz cried.
Bonnie sat back down. With great care, she carefully undid the silver ribbon and worked loose the tape holding the peach-colored paper around the small package. The girls fidgeted and giggled.
"Hurry up!" Jennifer demanded. "We're dying to see what you think."
Folding the paper back, Bonnie revealed three CDs. "Oh, wow! Oh, my gosh. The sound track from Salena and Los Lonely Boys and...oh, this really is too much!"
"You told me you liked salsa music and loved Salena," Jennifer explained. "And that it would be too quiet, alone in your house, so Suz and I got these for you."
Of course, they had to listen to the three discs. They all trooped into the rec room. Jennifer put the three discs in the player and then, as an afterthought, lowered the volume a few notches.
Jerry watched Bonnie as the first strains of a jaunty Norteano cumbia tune poured out. In a moment, she began to tap her good foot and move with the music.
"Do you know how to dance to this?" Jennifer asked. "If you do, you've got to teach me, 'cause I think it is so cool."
"Yes, you've got to, you've just got to!" Suz seconded.
Bonnie stood and in slow motion, sketched out a few of the basic steps. The girls copied her and soon were getting into the mood of it. She sat down and let them have the floor.
After dancing through a couple of songs, Jennifer crossed the room and grabbed Jerry's hand. "Come on, Dad. You try it with me."
He set aside the drink he'd asked Mercedes to prepare--a margarita, in keeping with the evening's theme. He was determined he would not allow any call-outs tonight. Other doctors could take any emergencies. The tequila had gone to his head, in spite of the food, and left him feeling mellow.
He laughed. "You'll be sorry, squirt. I've got two left feet when it comes to dancing. I'll be stepping all over your toes."
That wasn't altogether true. He'd done his share of dancing in high school and college, and still sometimes took his dates out dancing if they indicated a liking for it. Picking up the basic steps was not hard, and before the first disc finished, he'd danced with all three of the girls. Bonnie clapped her approval.
The second disc was the Salena one, the first song a poignant ballad. Acting on impulse, Jerry crossed to Bonnie and held out his hands. "Come on...this is a slow one. All you have to do is sway to the music. You can do that, even with a cast on."
At first, she shook her head. "No, I won't be able to," she protested. "I'll probably fall or something. I've only been walking since two o'clock."
"I'll hang onto you," he promised.
"Yeah, come on," Jennifer urged. "Just one song."
It ended up being three, one after another. And, before the second was over, Jennifer herded her friends off to her room with an explanation that they had to see the photographs she'd taken at school which she'd just downloaded from her phone to her new tablet. Mercedes had retired to the kitchen, or perhaps her apartment off the garage. Jerry and Bonnie were left alone with melancholy words of lost love and loneliness whispered to the sensuous beat of a traditional acoustic guitar.
Jerry found Bonnie made an amazing dance partner, even in a cast. She moved with the grace and lightness of a gymnast, a natural athlete. He could feel when she started to grow tired. He tried to take more of her weight in the support of his arms around her. Finally, they slowed almost to a stop, just swaying to the music as he had suggested.
He absorbed the heat of her pliant body, letting it warm the last weary tension from his hands. Through the thin cotton dress, he could feel the gentle curve of her ribs, the shifting of the work-toned muscles on her back. He absorbed her lush, feminine shape along with the heat and the vital energy she exuded.
When she turned, bowing her head to rest against his shoulder, her hair swirled out, tickling under his chin. He bent to bury his face in the dark cloud of it, inhaling the tantalizing scent that seemed to be uniquely Bonnie's. Coupled with the tequila warming him inside, that scent made him dizzy.
"Am I really holding you up or are you holding me up?" He asked the question into the top of her head, the soft strands clinging to his lips as he spoke. "I'm starting to feel like the room is revolving around us. I think Mercedes gave me a double shot in that margarita."
Bonnie giggled. "If you aren't holding me up, I'd better sit down. My legs are starting to feel like jelly. Is this room awfully warm, or is it just me?"
He stopped. He released her to move both hands to her shoulders, holding her at arms' length. She tipped her head back to look up at him, unconsciously offering him the curve of her throat, almost as tempting as her rosy, parted lips. The tender hollow above her collarbone, those two bare shoulders...sites for a hundred kisses. Sites he had to sample.
When she recognized his intent, her eyes widened for an instant and then fluttered shut. She didn't move away, didn't tense or stiffen as he half-expected her to.
They were caught up in a moment outside of time, separate and distinct from reality and everyday life. In the distance, a sultry voice crooned urgent words of love in Spanish, while the guitar beat became quicker and more demanding.
Slipping past an intoxicating cloud of vanilla and cinnamon, silken hair, and feminine heat, Jerry found Bonnie's lips and took possession. Her mouth was warm and firm, but yielding, parting in welcome, tasting of chocolate, sweet fruit and sizzling spice. He tasted her thoroughly, savoring every subtle nuance of flavor and texture in a long, leisurely kiss.
He moved his hands again, dropping one to circle behind her, coming to rest at the hollow of her back, at the very point where the outward curve of her elegant little tush began. The other rose to cup her head, fingers weaving into the luxurious cascade of hair. Then his lips took possession of hers again.
Some seconds later, he pulled away from her lips and bent to nuzzle under her chin. From there, he moved to trace the line of her collarbone with the tip of his tongue. There her skin held a trace of salt along with the sweetness. She shivered at the moist touch, her fingers tightening on his shoulders.
Only two thin layers of fabric, his T-shirt and her dress separated their bodies. He felt her nipples harden, thrusting against the confining material, as if seeking closer contact. At her back, his hand slid lower, curving over the outward slope of her derriere to press her closer to him. He wanted to caress those eager breasts, too, but with which hand? If only he had a third so he would not have to abandon either of his current holds.
Caught in an elemental urgency, he spared no thought to where they were, or to any of the reasons this should not be happening. Then, at the outer periphery of awareness, a door slammed, and girlish, giggling voices sounded, coming closer.
Bonnie stiffened and jerked free of his hold. Color washed up over her shoulders and throat to flood her face. Then it faded, leaving her unnaturally pale. She stumbled back two steps and sank onto the couch.
"Santa Madre, what in the world were we doing? What were we thinking of?"
Her words hissed out in a shocked, taut whisper. She reached up and scrubbed a hand across her lips, as if to wipe away all trace of his kisses.

Here is the cover again and below another excerpt at the point the heat begins to come on ;-). And below, there's a picture of me in my blue cast when I was recovering from the accident that started this book as an idea! I lived in that darn chair for most of the six weeks I wore my cast. I think this was the day I went to have it removed--as Bonnie has just done in the excerpt below!
Excerpt:
She looked like the wholesome

First Sneak Peek at Hearts to Heal
Gwynn here, having to brag a little about a long out of print tale of mine that will soon be available again!. You got a peek at the cover a couple of posts back but here it is again and now I'll offer a short excerpt, too.
A bit of background, when I lived in southern Arizona some years ago, my late husband and I were avid outdoor folks and did a lot of hiking, 4-wheeling and exploring. In April of 1999, we went hiking in the Huachuca Mountains up at the top of Carr Canyon Road with another couple. We were trying to find an old mine where we'd picked up crystals years before on the debris dumped down the hill from driving the adit or mine tunnel into the mountain. I had an kind of freaky accident that day and broke both bones in my right leg, just above the ankle. I kept calm through the adventure by telling myself I had to remember everything I could about the affair so I could put it into a book! Later that summer I did exactly that and Healing Hearts came to be written. I even borrowed a bit of inspiration for the hero from the orthopedic surgeon who put me back together and told me I would be hiking again in a few months, as indeed I was. He was a very good looking man and I am sure garnered a bit of feminine admiration from patients and medical staff with whom he worked! But Dr. Jerry is not him in a thousand key ways. I never make a real person a character but gather bits and pieces from many real people!
Bonnie, the heroine, is not me at all, probably less of me in her character than in most of my heroines, but I enjoyed her a great deal and she became very real to me during the writing. Secondary characters came along and became real as well, each one with a key role to play in the story as Jerry and Bonnie took turns related the epic of their rocky road to building a relationship. I'm so happy that this special book will soon be available to readers again. I know it was not widely distributed before so it will be new to most who encounter it!
Here is a tidbit, the first confrontation that appears in the book. Bonnie and Jerry are not strangers and have clashed a bit before! You can bet there will be a lot more fireworks here before the HEA ending!

*****
Dr. Jerry Bertini shuffled
out of the operating room, shedding his mask and gloves. Five major surgeries
in nine hours, starting at eight this morning. Two legs, one hip, one elbow and
one arm smashed into splinters. Why couldn’t people learn to keep their bones
in one piece? If they ever did, he’d be out of work, but there was little
danger of that. Between the crazy scrapes the college kids and GIs got into,
the auto crashes, and the normal childhood mishaps, he could clone himself
twice and still be busy.
In the doctor’s lounge, he
shoved quarters into the soda machine, grabbed the cold can that clattered
down, and sank onto the closest of the sagging chairs. He dozed off before he
finished the cola, only to be startled awake by the intercom. Hearing his name,
he had a hunch it wasn’t the first time he’d been paged. Oh shit, another one.
By the time he reached the
ER, he was wide awake again. He finished the lukewarm soda and chucked the can.
Ann Flannigan had the x-rays ready for him, already clipped on the light box.
She was a good nurse, not like many of the giddy young girls, too immature and
irresponsible for their profession.
He studied the film for a
few seconds. Nasty break. Tibia and
femur both, almost in a line, angling upward from the outside, just above the
ankle. The ends of both bones were pushed down, distorting the muscle and
over-stretching the ligaments and tendons. Surgical
reduction. No other option, really. He crossed the hall to the cubicle
where this as-yet-nameless patient waited.
He recognized her at once—Bonnie
Verdugo, the prickly, opinionated little Latina EMT. She looked up as he swept
through the curtained door, chocolate-flecked hazel eyes sparking defiance.
Beneath her dusky tan, she was pale, stress and tension visible in the
tightness of her lips, the pinched look to her nostrils. All considered,
though, she was dealing well with the shock and pain. They had her on an IV
already. Good.
Enjoying the unusual chance
to have this particular woman at a disadvantage, he folded his arms and
observed her for a silent moment. Of all the female EMTs and student nurses he
worked with, she was the only one he could not reduce to tears or simpering
giggles with a few choice words. Now, he couldn’t resist a jibe.
“Well, if it isn’t Ms.
Super-EMT herself. How does it feel to be the victim?”
“Like a bad day at work. I
wouldn’t be here if I had a choice.”
Her husky voice held the
same go-to-hell independence that blazed in her eyes. Fidgeting in the
wheelchair, she twisted the end of her long braid. Only the slight tremor of
her hand revealed her anxiety.
He snorted. “Just like jail,
ninety percent of the people end up here due to their own stupidity. Unless
some old lady ran you down with her wheelchair, I’d bet you’re in the same
boat.”
“Hiking accident,” she
ground out. “I slid about eight feet and lit on my bent ankle. A nasty break,
isn’t it?”
He nodded. “Nasty, but
fixable. I’ve got to do an open reduction—put some hardware in there to hold
everything in place while the bones heal.”
She huffed out a breath,
looking everywhere but directly at him. “My insurance ought to cover that. They
don’t make exclusions for stupidity, last I heard, or clumsiness. I just want
to be back on both my feet as soon as I can.”
“Be a walk in the park.
You’ll be hiking again in no time.” He glanced at his watch. “When did you last
eat?”
She looked up at the clock
on the wall and mentally counted. “About 2:30, two granola bars up on Platina
Ridge. Almost five hours now.”
“Okay. I’ll go set up so we
can get that surgery done this evening.”
Jerry turned from the room,
feeling her gaze boring holes in his back all the way down the corridor. That’s one tough little lady. Got a chip on
her shoulder bigger than New Jersey ,
but a lot of gumption in a small package. Make that a small, easy-to-look-at
package.
Dirty and hurt, bundled in
one of those ridiculous floppy gowns, she was still all woman. Hardly bigger
than a half-grown kid, but there was nothing childlike about her. He’d heard
she had to fight for everything she had, too. Well, there were worse ways to
get there, and it certainly made a person value what he achieved.
His own progress hadn’t
always been easy, but he wouldn’t trade his M.D. for the top post in Grandpa
Bertini’s Boston
law firm. And he could never have reached the pinnacle until the old man, Dad
and brother Joe were all gone, even if he had chosen a legal career. Medicine
was better, anyway.
Here, every case was a
special challenge—to undo the damage and make someone whole again. He was never
too tired to feel a thrill when he accomplished it. No, he’d made the right
choice, maybe for the wrong reasons, but still the right choice.
***
Bonnie was already under
anesthesia by the time he prepped and went into the OR to do his job. On the
table she hardly raised a ridge under the blankets, folded back from her leg to
bare it from the knee down.
His weariness fell away as
he took the scalpel and made the first cut. With the oxygen mask hiding most of
her face, with her tough mouth silent and her busy form still, he could forget
who he worked on. There were only flesh and bone to be repaired, tasks his
hands knew with total, intimate familiarity. He bent to the work, tiredness,
sassy women and all else forgotten.
The surgery took just over
an hour. This time, when he left the OR, he left the hospital. He prayed he
wouldn’t get called back tonight. Exhaustion had caught up with him again. He
drove home slowly, grateful the car almost knew the way by itself.
